Nutrition - A Building Block of Wellness

We’ve all experienced that feeling of sluggishness after eating empty calorie or dense foods. Imagine how much better you could feel with a balanced, nutritious diet!

What we eat isn’t just about satisfying our taste buds, or even managing weight. It’s how our body fuels itself and keeps the engine going. The right amount and the right type of fuel is what helps us live a more energetic life.

Food impacts your everyday health, both mental and physical. Getting a good balance of macronutrients, vitamins, and minerals will have you feeling great!

Let’s get into the most important concepts of nutrition and how you can start making helpful changes in your life today:

Calories, a basic of nutrition

Do you know your calorie needs? Do you monitor your food intake?

Your body has a set amount of calories that it needs to maintain itself, plus sustain the activities you do every day. This calorie equation of Calories In vs. Calories Out is crucial in figuring out how much to eat each day. There are several factors that impact your daily calorie allowance including your age, gender, height, weight, activity level, medications, and sleep, to name a few.

Understanding and using the New and Improved Nutrition Facts Label found on packaged foods and beverages is your daily tool for making informed food choices that contribute to healthy lifelong eating habits. ChooseMyPlate.gov has a wealth of information to help you build a healthy eating style that you can maintain for a lifetime.

Ways to monitor your nutrition

There are apps like Lose It! that can help you calculate your daily food intake with a calorie equation and keep you on track with daily logging. Once you educate yourself on your food intake, choosing nutrient-dense foods and reasonable portions becomes even easier.

Setting short and long term goals is important for success. It’s important that you focus on one or two goals at a time. Great, effective goals are S.M.A.R.T Goals: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely.
